The Oxford School of Drama is delighted to announce the appointment of Karen Hebden as its new Executive Director.
Karen joins OSD at a pivotal moment for actor training, as the sector navigates significant change while reaffirming the importance of inclusive practice, craft and industry relevance within training. Renowned for its unique learning environment and commitment to developing thoughtful, skilled and resilient actors, the Oxford School of Drama continues to play a vital role in nurturing the next generation of artists.
In her new role, Karen will work closely with the School’s Principal, Edward Hicks, staff, and the wider community to help implement the strategic direction, strengthen operations, and ensure the School continues to deliver outstanding professional training for actors.
Speaking on her appointment, Karen said:
“I’m delighted to be taking on the role of Executive Director at the Oxford School of Drama at such a creatively rich and challenging time for our sector. Drama training thrives on collaboration, curiosity and courage, and I’m excited to work alongside staff, students and partners to support the School’s next chapter. I bring experience from my teaching practice, venue development and leadership, alongside change management and professional development work at RADA, and across regional and national stages. Together, I’m looking forward to strengthening OSD’s distinctive voice and ensuring it continues to nurture bold, generous and resilient artists.”
Karen brings a wealth of experience across theatre and education. Previous roles include CEO and Artistic Director of Derby Playhouse and Head of Professional Development at RADA. She is also a published playwright, theatre director and acting coach, with extensive experience working across regional and national contexts.
Edward Hicks, Principal of the Oxford School of Drama, said: “We are delighted to welcome Karen Hebden to OSD. Her passion for actor training and the range of experience she brings with her make her an exceptional addition to our leadership team at this important moment in our development.”
Karen succeeds Liz Wilson, who served as Executive Director since 2017. Liz played a key role in strengthening the School’s foundations and steering it through a period of change and challenge for the sector. The Board and staff thank her warmly for her dedication and contribution to The Oxford School of Drama.
Karen joined the School in October and worked alongside Liz during a strategic handover period. As the School moves forward, it looks ahead with confidence to the leadership, insight and energy Karen brings.
